Radio IITA 88.5’s mission goes beyond broadcasting; we’re dedicated to transforming agricultural practices and empowering local farmers. Recently, we concluded the second edition of our impactful outreach program – the Radio IITA Farmers Outreach, focusing on yam farmers in Oyo state, Nigeria.

Yam farmers from communities within the Akinyele Local Government Area joined us for two days of intensive training on Minisetts technology. This innovative technique involves cutting ‘mother’ seed tubers into small setts, allowing optimal sprouting and increased productivity. Led by our Head of Communication, Kathy Lopez, and Radio IITA Lead, Dajie Odok, the program aimed to equip farmers with essential knowledge and skills to enhance their yields and livelihoods.

During the training, Dr. Olugboyega Pelemo, a Yam improvement specialist at IITA, guided participants through the intricacies of yam cultivation and introduced them to improved yam varieties developed by IITA. He emphasized the importance of seed yam production and highlighted how our outreach efforts address the critical issue of seed scarcity among farmers.

One of the program’s highlights was the hands-on demonstration at a farmland in Ijaye, Akinyele, where participants learned how to plant the minisetts effectively. This practical experience reinforced the training and empowered farmers to implement new techniques on their farms.

At Radio IITA, we believe that communication is key to agricultural development. By disseminating research-validated knowledge and fostering partnerships, we aim to revolutionize farming practices and ensure food security for communities across sub-Saharan Africa. Our outreach program aligns with IITA’s core research themes, including yam, cassava, cowpea, maize, and more, demonstrating our commitment to addressing the region’s agricultural challenges.

As we reflect on the success of the Radio IITA Farmers Outreach, we’re inspired by the impact we’ve made on local farmers’ lives. However, our work is far from over. We call on like-minded organizations and individuals to join us in our mission. Together, we can reach even more farmers in rural communities, providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive.

Are you passionate about agricultural innovation and rural development? Partner with Radio IITA to make a difference in the lives of farmers across Africa. Let’s collaborate to bring cutting-edge agricultural technologies to those who need them most. Reach out to us today and participate in our journey towards a sustainable and resilient agricultural future.
