The Information Technology Center at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) recently held its 2024 Operation Management User Empowerment Week, a dynamic, week-long event packed with activities aimed at enhancing employee productivity and cybersecurity awareness. Through engaging roadshows, office-to-office campaigns, and interactive online sessions, the initiative focused on how technological tools can improve user experience while minimizing cybersecurity risksโa vital aspect of delivering top-notch customer service.
A standout event was a hands-on Microsoft OneDrive workshop, where participants learned efficient techniques for file storage, collaboration, and security. Additionally, a session on Cybersecurity and AI Integration with Customer Serviceย and Physical Security highlighted the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in both digital and physical security measuresย and its potential to elevate customer interactions.
In her opening remarks, Deputy Director General of Corporate Services, Hilde Koper-Limbourg, represented by the Head of Information Technology Operations Management, underscored the importance of cybersecurity as a shared responsibility. She explained that while the IT team provides essential infrastructure, each user serves as a critical line of defense. “By equipping employees with the right knowledge,” she said, “organizations can ensure comprehensive protection against cyber threats.”
Head of Information Technology Operations Management, Yinka Fakunle, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that cybersecurity is foundational to customer satisfaction. “Once users are protected, the organization is also protected. A proactive approach safeguards sensitive data, promotes smooth operations, and minimizes the disruptions often caused by cyber threats,” he noted. Fakunle also warned of the risks posed by unprotected personal or job-related information, which could be exploited by increasingly sophisticated malicious actors.
An insightful presentation by the Head of Security at IITA Headquarters, David Oluwadare explored AI-driven innovations in cyber and physical security, such as CCTV, vehicle tracking, and facial recognition. He highlighted AI’s advantages, particularly its processing speed and cost-efficiency, and shared plans for future enhancements, including drones and solar-powered technology, to bolster security and productivity.
Throughout the week, IT experts engaged with employees on practical cybersecurity measures. They advised on critical actions like enabling two-factor authentication, avoiding random link clicks, regularly cleaning up obsolete files, and updating devices. Participants also received tips on safeguarding personal information, such as using strong passwords, exercising caution with public Wi-Fi, and limiting what is shared on social media. The sessions encouraged a proactive approach to security, both digitally and physically.
Employees eagerly participated, asking questions and sharing feedback, which led to in-depth discussions on enhancing user experience and cybersecurity practices within the organization. IITAโs IT User Empowerment Week not only equipped employees with valuable knowledge but also reinforced the message that everyone plays a role in cybersecurity, ensuring a safer, more productive work environment for all.
