The 10th International Day of Women and Girls in Science, themed “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science,” was commemorated on February 11, 2025, at IITA-CGIAR through a hybrid event. The celebration brought together young girls, women leaders, scientists, and representatives from various sectors to discuss women’s leadership roles and contributions to sustainable development.
Hilde Koper-Limbourg, IITA Deputy Director General for Corporate Services, encouraged young girls to pursue impactful careers in STEM, reaffirming her commitment to gender equality in science and inspiring future generations to excel.
Bernard Vanlauwe, IITA Deputy Director General for Research for Development (R4D), highlighted IITAโs efforts in increasing female participation in science through MSc and PhD programs. He emphasized the vital role of women in scientific research and agriculture, urging them to keep striving for excellence. โTo all women and girls in STEM, the future of women in agriculture is in your hands. Keep pushing, keep inspiringโyour contributions and voice in science matter,โ he said.
Dr. Mamou Ehui, wife of IITA Director General and Executive Director of the Global Phosphorus Institute, motivated young girls to dream big, stay curious, and believe in their ability to create change. She described STEM as a powerful tool for innovation, leadership, and impact. โYou have a place in research, and your ideas will help shape the future,โ she assured them.
A student attendee, Mabel Martins, expressed her enthusiasm for STEM, sharing her passion for learning about plants, animals, and insects. She noted that the program had broadened her understanding of opportunities in STEM fields.
Students from various institutions participated in the event, including American Christian Academy, Community Grammar School, Deeper Life School, Ibadan International School, and Rosakin High School.
The celebration featured a STEM-focused quiz competition, a themed poster presentation, and an exhibition tour within the IITA campus, all designed to inspire and foster interest in science and technology among young girls.
